One of the many concerns of Atlantans during the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra’s extended labor dispute was if its popular holiday concerts would go on. They will indeed. The delayed 70th season is well underway, and the ASO and its Chamber Chorus will present the first of those holiday performances, Handel’s “Messiah” (Part 1), under the baton of Norman Mackenzie, Thursday and Friday nights at 8. Vivaldi’s Gloria also is on the program.
The ASO Kids’ Christmas program that was to be performed by the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra on Dec. 7 has been cancelled. But there is more holiday programming on tap: Christmas with the ASO (with Mackenzie conducting the orchestra, ASO Chorus, Morehouse College Glee Club and Gwinnett Young Singers) on Dec. 11-13; and A Very Merry Holiday Pops on Dec. 19-20 (with Michael Krajewski conducting the ASO, vocalist Reginald Smith Jr. and the All-City Chorus). In another schedule change, an originally planned Dec. 18 performance of the pops program is not being presented.
All concerts in Symphony Hall, 1280 Peachtree St. N.E., Atlanta. $25-$99. 404-733-5000, aso.org.
